Ryerson Student Centre Sustainability Improvements

At the Ryerson Student Centre, we know how important sustainability is to students. As a result we have taken several steps in recent years to increase our sustainable practices and lessen our impact on the environment.
When you come to the Oakham Café or Ram in the Rye, you can be assured that all take out containers including coffee cups, to-go containers, cutlery and stir sticks are biodegradable. Also, our beverage program includes fair trade organic coffee & sugar, organic tea and fair trade organic hot chocolate.
Most recently we made some major changes with respect to our food purchases in order that we might offer healthier, more sustainable options:
- Our Ram and Oakham Burgers are made from locally raised beef and are free from hormones, antibiotics and fillers like soy and wheat, making them gluten free and delicious. Last year we sold over 14,000 burgers in the Ram in the Rye and Oakham Café combined!
- All of our eggs (and we consume well over 42,000 eggs in a year at the Student Centre!) are locally sourced, hormone & antibiotic free and come from cage free (happier) hens.
- Our milk is local and organic.
Finally, the most recent implementation has been our green waste program. Our kitchen and café collect all our green waste and send it out to a compost program, diverting hundreds of kilograms of waste every month from landfill.
At the Ryerson Student Centre we are always looking for ways to lessen our impact on the environment as well as function in a more sustainable and ethical way. Stay tuned for more improvements in the future!
